What a weekend for the Vikings and what a way to end the ice season! Over the March 28-29, 2015 weekend, the Vikings sent a team to Diez, Germany to compete in the 12th annual Rockets Cup then capped off the weekend by hosting a team from Canada in a friendly match on Sunday night in Mainz, Germany.
In the Rockets Cup, the Vikings started strong on Saturday, completing the first round undefeated and making it into the top pool for the championship round. Unfortunately, the remaining eight skaters could only muster 4th place on the weekend. While not what the Vikings hoped for, it was the best finish in the Rockets Cup by a Vikings team.
On Sunday night, a team of Canadians docked their Rhine River tour boat on the banks near Rüdesheim, Germany and climbed aboard a bus headed for the Mainz ice rink. At 730 pm the puck dropped on a friendly game, pitting Vikings RED/WHITE against these gentlemen from the Great White North. At the end of regulation the game was tied 4:4. In the shootout, the Canadians pulled it out, 5:4. Following the game, 27 players/wives went to nearby Brauhaus Castel in Mainz-Kastel to sample the delicious brews, pick and finger-foods, and enjoy the hockey brotherhood that knows no boundaries. The night showed again why HC Wiesbaden truly is your home for hockey in Wiesbaden!
Here’s to a great season and to all those Vikings that will be moving on this summer. GVG!
