The HC Wiesbaden Vikings traveled to Bavaria last weekend to participate in
the 24th annual Armed Forces Alpine Classic held at the 1936 Olympic ice
rink in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This year the club brought 3 teams. Vikings
BLACK competed in the 1st Division, while Vikings RED and WHITE played in
the 2nd
Division. Players from the UK, Belgium, Italy, and Germany all represented
their communities in a fun-filled weekend of hockey, beer, and comradery in
the scenic Alps.
The Wiesbaden club had a terrific showing going 9-4 altogether. In the 1st
Division, Vikings BLACK placed second in a spirited championship game.
Vikings RED went 5-0 in route to winning the 2nd Division. David Leska won
the defensive player of the tournament award and Joe Konczyk won the goalie
of the tournament award – both from the Vikings RED team.
Despite a few injuries, it was a fantastic weekend of hockey capped off with
a team
dinner at Berggasthof Panorama. Afterwards, the players, families and
friends from 6 nationalities that make up the Vikings headed downtown for a
nice shaker. All drove home sore and dehydrated the next day..until next
year Garmisch; vielen danke!
